Split-levels, condos and a building boom from the 1970s and 80s
Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 1-year estimates, via Census Reporter.
A typical Anchorage house is a split-level or two-storey with wood or composite siding, an attached garage and a deck. Snow, freeze-thaw cycles and strong sun in summer wear coatings at the bottom of walls, on deck boards and on south-facing trim first.
Close to half the housing stock predates 1980. Paint in homes built before 1978 may contain lead, so scraping and sanding there should follow lead-safe practices.
With about a third of homes in multifamily buildings, many requests come from condo boards and townhome associations planning hallway, stairwell or exterior repaint cycles.
